Surgical Treatment for Posterolateral Corner Injuries
Surgical reconstruction of the posterolateral corner aims to restore the normal anatomy of the knee. While multiple surgical techniques exist, the most successful methods focus on accurately reconstructing all the native insertions of the damaged structures. This approach allows for early range-of-motion exercises and has been shown to produce excellent long-term results.
The goal of surgery is to stabilize the knee and allow patients to return to high-level activities. Thanks to advancements in surgical techniques, many individuals who once faced career-ending injuries can now resume their athletic careers or enjoy normal daily activities without ongoing knee problems.
Recovery and Rehabilitation
Recovery from posterolateral corner surgery typically takes between 6 to 12 months, depending on the severity of the injury and the involvement of other knee structures. Physical therapy begins immediately to restore range of motion, but weight-bearing activities are restricted for the first six weeks to protect the reconstructed ligaments.
At the six-week mark, patients can begin a partially protected weight-bearing program using crutches, gradually transitioning to walking without assistance. By 7 to 8 weeks, most individuals can drive again. Rehabilitation continues with endurance and strengthening exercises, and agility drills are introduced around 4 months into the recovery process. Return to sports or high-level activities usually occurs between 9 to 12 months, although this timeline may vary based on individual progress.
